Morning Masterclasses
Masterclass 1: Predictive Workload by Harriet Morley, BAE Systems Submarines
Tasks conducted by human operators/maintainers should neither overload or underload an individual or team to the point that it impacts on safety and performance. Gaining understanding of the mental and physical demands is important when considering not only the design of the systems, but also the number/competency of the individuals within the team and the individual/team training required. This workshop will provide an overview of the concept and definitions of workload, approaches and methods that can be used to conduct a task and workload analysis and some of the key factors to consider when deciding if and how to conduct a task and workload analysis to support the design and evaluation of a future system. You'll get hands on experience of conducting a task and workload analysis followed by an interactive discussion on pros, cons and pitfalls in conducting the analysis.
Masterclass 2: Safety Culture by Steven Shorrock, EUROCONTROL
In this session, you'll be introduced to the EUROCONTROL safety culture discussion cards via practical exercises. The Cards are a practical resource to aid real discussion about safety by any person or team in any organisation. The cards use broadly the same concepts as the EUROCONTROL survey methodology, though everyday language is used to make the cards completely accessible. The cards can be downloaded, printed and used without the need for external support. In this Masterclass, we'll use the cards to recount and share experiences, and model how the cards can be used in practice.
Masterclass 3: Prospective Risk Assessment by Paul Salmon, University of the Sunshine Coast
Prospective risk assessment is a critical component of effective safety management and involves the application of structured methods to identify potential risks and develop effective controls. You'll get an overview of systems thinking-based risk assessment followed by practical training in three state-of-the-art methods: the Event Analysis of Systemic Teamwork Broken Links approach (EAST-BL), the Networked Hazard Analysis and Risk management System (Net-HARMS) and the Systems Theoretic Accident Model and Process - Systems Theoretic Process Analysis (STAMP-STPA). You'll get step-by-step guidance in how to apply each method, discussion of case study applications and practical exercises.
Afternoon Masterclasses
Masterclass 4: Qualitative Human Error Analysis led by Steph Simpson, Abbott Risk Consulting
In this Masterclass, you'll learn about the taxonomies of human error, the associated factors that can affect a person’s performance and discussion of safeguards and mitigation measures in error scenarios, so you can practice the application of qualitative human error analysis techniques. You'll get an understanding of human error taxonomies and you'll be able to identify factors that can affect performance. You'll hear about techniques including the identification of preventative safeguards, mitigation measures and opportunities for error recovery. You'll see how to develop and present recommendations to improve human performance and minimise the potential for error.
Masterclass 5: Investigations in Healthcare led by Laura Pickup, University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust
In this Masterclass, we'll explore and discuss key features of a healthcare safety investigation, as well as introducing emerging findings into the fundamental principles underpinning effective engagement and learning. You'll explore how and why investigations in healthcare may differ from other safety critical industries, and consider factors and challenges that may impact the effectiveness of learning and delivering recommendations. You'll learn about a proposed set of principles for healthcare safety investigations which are the result of ongoing work analysing interviews with 50 UK and international human factors, safety science, investigation and patient safety specialists. We'll consider whether these principles indicate a clear direction for future changes to healthcare investigations, to improve learning and avoidance of further harm.
Masterclass 6: Making the most of LinkedIn by Kerry Watkins, Social for Good
This is a professional skills workshop for those wanting to use LinkedIn to better effect. In this session, you'll learn how to articulate your objectives, recognise your audience and communicate with them effectively. Whether you're coming to this from a personal point of view or as a company, you'll find out how social media can work for you.
In the breaks and at lunchtime, you'll also get the chance to take a look around our Careers Fair which will be running in parallel!
This is our annual event for those interested in a career in ergonomics & human factors, and for those with available jobs, graduate places and student places. It offers the very best of careers guidance, options and opportunities. So join us for a day of advice, information and insight. Soon you'll be able to read more about what you'll experience but in the meantime be assured you'll get a lot from your time.
Our doctoral consortium is targeted towards PhD students and early-career researchers who have started their research with a plan of what they would like to achieve. If this is you, you'll get a chance to present, share and discuss your research ideas and plans with your peers who are at a similar stage in their careers.
You'll get feedback, advice and guidance from our experienced academics who will be facilitating the day and also from other students participating in the day.
You'll also get a chance to meet and chat with others who are attending the Masterclasses and Careers Day which are running in parallel at the same venue.
What you need to do
To attend, you'll need to complete a short form giving an outline of your research including a 500 word abstract. Our facilitators will assess your entry and we'll get back to you. If your abstract is accepted, you'll be able to buy a ticket for the day or you can choose to attend the whole conference.

The programme
We have a packed programme over the three days of the conference so you'll have the chance to find out the latest research, insight and thinking in human factors across a whole range of sectors and topics.
The conference will feature lectures, keynotes, paper and poster presentations, together with opportunities to meet your human factors heroes and member leads and to build new connections and networks. It will showcase applications and techniques across a range of sectors and domains.
The social side
There's plenty of opportunity for you to catch up with friends and colleagues during the breaks and at our organised socials in the evenings. There's interactive and fun entertainment on Monday evening and our drinks reception, awards celebration and 75th anniversary celebratory annual dinner takes place on Tuesday evening.

Chesford Grange is a lovely Tudor-style manor house set in 17 acres of the Warwickshire countryside just outside Kenilworth. It's a popular but quiet location where you can get away from the (home) office and do something different in style.

Our session rooms for the event are large and airy and are all fully accessible. There’s plenty of space where you can chat with other delegates or find a quiet corner for a call or a few emails. We'll have our own wifi for the event so you'll never be disconnected!

If you're travelling by train, the hotel is a few minutes’ taxi ride from Warwick Parkway railway station (4 miles), which has direct links to both London and Birmingham.
If you're flying to Birmingham, use the airport monorail to take you to Birmingham International railway station. The venue is a 20 minute taxi ride from there (13 miles).

Amanda is the Head of Human Factors Capability at Thales UK, a member of the CIEHF Council, former President (2020/21), and a UK International Ergonomics Association (IEA) council representative. During her CIEHF presidency, she initiated the ‘Design for Everybody’ project to raise awareness about human factors and the need for more diverse anthropometric data to facilitate inclusive design. Her applied human factors career spans nearly 30 years, mostly in the Defence and Rail sectors. Experience as a human error analyst in rail safety incident investigations, and project work at Thales, allowed Amanda to develop and apply an award-winning approach to capture human factors risks to cyber security; the Cyber Human Error Assessment Tool (CHEAT®). The approach was inspired by reports that the majority of cyber security incidents are caused inadvertently by employees. After leading a team of authors, two CIEHF publications on the topic were produced in 2022. A book about human factors and cyber security is in progress, due for publication in early 2025.
Professor, Human factors and Transport Systems, University of Leeds
Professor Merat is an experimental psychologist, leads the Human Factors and Safety Group, @ITS Leeds and is Director of Virtuocity@Leeds. Her main research interests are in understanding the interaction of road users with new technologies, including driver distraction/inattention and impairment. She is an expert in understanding the human factors implications of highly automated vehicles (HAVs), and has conducted research on both drivers’ and pedestrians’ interactions with HAVs. She has been PI to key pojects in this area, including AdaptIVe, CityMobil2, InterACT, HumanDrive, L3PILOT and is currently lead the User sub-project of HiDrive. Professor Merat is Chair of the Transportation Research Board sub-committee on Human Factors in Road Vehicle Automation; the European Chair of the trilateral (EU-US-Japan) Working Group on Human Factors of Automated Vehicles, and an advisory board member of over 15 organisations. She has published over 250 peer reviewed articles and collaborates with over 100 industrial and research organisations. She is currently leading an ISO Task Force on design guidelines for future Driver Monitoring Systems.
Director of Paediatric Intensive Care and Anaesthetics, Glasgow Children's Hospital
Neil Spenceley is the Director of Paediatric Intensive Care and Anaesthetics in Glasgow and the former Scottish Patient Safety Lead for Paediatrics. He is originally from The Highlands, trained in Edinburgh but soon defected West to start his somewhat bumpy career at Glasgow Children's. After living in Tauranga, Sydney and Vancouver he bizarrely returned to Glasgow where the weather is terrible but the people are positive and funny. His physiological interests include oxygen delivery, this and that but mostly that. However, his psychological interests, and real passion, lie in workplace behaviours, culture, resilience engineering and being glass half full.
